Topic: Using a spud bar the right way  (Read 4415 times)

In the thread "Northern Indiana Ice reports" someone mention that you better have a spud bar with you and know how to use it.

For us guys that had no one to teach us the ropes, I'd similar to hear your way of using ane properly. I had i with me last Sunday simply with people sitting around line-fishing I call back I'd feel like an idiot trying to strike the ice To learn.

Any ice wisdom out there?

Heres a good video to aid empathise how to use information technology, And dont experience like an idiot if you learning to use information technology people should understand it could help save your life forth with the remainder of your safety gear!

You lot have to go to know how your white potato works. I would recommend finding ice that you feel comfy on and see how many hits it takes to get through. For case, I know I cannot get through four inches of clear ice in 2 hits with mine. If I draw water, only non go through, i know its a trivial less than four.  Through in 1 hit and I'1000 backing away quickly.  After a while yous will be able to tell past the sound and vibration of 1 striking.

Dude.....Dude!! Greg! Wake up! Y'all're on burn!

also, don't worry nigh what others think. I got some dirty looks this weekend down due south as i walked by others spudding.  If I didn't have it with me, myself and three others guys would have gotten wet every bit we found one inch of ice in the center of the lake full of people. I didn't see anyone else using 1.

Dude.....Dude!! Greg! Wake upwardly! You're on fire!

it enabled me to go over fish on a lake that was void of whatever fisherman tonight.

Never tell a fish where its supposed to be

Good video!!!

I walked a hundred yards to get to a spot 120 feet from shore.

Best advice I can give is get to know it!

Never tell a fish where its supposed to be

it enabled me to get over fish on a lake that was void of any fisherman this evening.

Ur a fish catching son of a gun!!! Well done!! And style to be safety

While spudding out before sunday-upwardly this weekend I caught the T handle of my spud right on my finger and bankrupt that dang finger.  Still had a swell trip, just I'm sitting here in a splint...

While spudding out before sun-up this weekend I caught the T handle of my white potato right on my finger and broke that dang finger.  Still had a great trip, just I'm sitting hither in a splint...

That stinks, promise you lot heal up soon.  Peradventure demand ane without a T handle.

If mine didn't have a T-handle it would exist at the bottom of the lake.  Perchance if yous had a expert hand strap you could eliminate the t-handle.

I was told to hit the verbal same spot iii times in a row with a potato bar. If it punches through on whatsoever of the hits, the ice is non prophylactic. That rule has been very successful for me.

I was told to hitting the exact aforementioned spot 3 times in a row with a murphy bar. If it punches through on any of the hits, the ice is not safe. That rule has been very successful for me.

Pretty practiced rule of pollex for YOUR spud bar.  The problem is white potato bars are not uniform.  Each has its own weight and sharpness and each person may swing them with different strength.  That is what makes it hard to but 'tell' someone how to use one, simply for certain three strikes in the aforementioned spot from a grown man and information technology does not get through the ice is pretty good.

I make marks on mine with a sharpie for quick measuring.

Don't be embarrassed!  If checking every 5ft makes you feel rubber, practise it.
If that bomber hat keeps your ears warm at -20 wear it.
If Chapstick keeps you from peeling skin off your lips put information technology on.

Like wax said, the simply way to positively know how to use YOUR murphy bar is to use it on actual ice over fourth dimension.  The more than experience you have using a specific i the better and safer y'all will be.  That'due south exactly why you should take it every fourth dimension, to proceeds experience.

I too put some black electrical record at the iv" mark.  I accept my spud blow through with even so many hits information technology takes, and so pull it upwardly tight against the bottom of the ice and I know immediately how thick i'thou continuing on.  The experience is probably one of the best determining factors though.  Good difficult water ice y'all can definitely tell over soft ice.  Like others said take your time, use your murphy oft and you lot will develop a feel for information technology.
